ALEA B1 - Folder I.C. 99

Alea B1 is the first extra issue of Alea Magazine, the magazine of of cultural anthropology which, in the Italian panorama, constitutes a true unicum.
This first extra issue of Alea was born almost by chance, from the discovery of an archive folder that had gone unnoticed for decades and which, the editorial staff of the magazine, well thought of bringing to light and making us known.

Alea B1 is the editorial reproduction of the folder I.C. 99, accidentally discovered by Pasquale Menditto during an ethnographic research. After completing the bureaucratic process for the acquisition of the material, the editorial staff studied the documents contained within it: three files, three floppy disks and two audio cassettes. The confused and heterogeneous organization of the sources, however, immediately appeared difficult to decipher, this editorial replica nevertheless returns a mosaic of intriguing documents, given their ability to cross distant times and places and becomes a fascinating enigma for the reader, invited to decipher and investigate what is in effect an undeciphered enigma (accompanied by newspaper articles which talk about strange deaths, but also documents and treaties containing biotechnology patents, cloning, energy sources).

The diary of an ethnologist on a mission to Marettimo in 1956; documents from an international scientific foundation; the proceedings of a Roman conference on the future of energy sources in 1979; the notes of an anthropologist in a biotechnological laboratory in 1998; micro-film of design schemes; and again, wiretapping, newspaper articles, draft publications. Why was this folder compiled? And what is the bond that the different sources have with each other - if there is one?

"Ours is not a critical edition of historical sources: firstly, because we have not been able to trace the historical context of production of much of the material; secondly, because we wish to share the loss and the fascination that thrilled us during our first forays into the lyrics ".
