ISSUE # 5
As soon as 1968 ended, we are in fact in 1972, the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze wrote a famous text in which he hoped that the thought of the future would become a "nomadic thought". But in what sense? A "war machine", argued Deleuze, something that can destroy all codes by never allowing itself to be "recoded". If Sicily were a concept, I would think, it would certainly be a nomadic concept in the sense in which Deleuze spoke of it: Italian but geologically tending towards Africa, hybrid and bastard, Norman and Baroque, Arab and austere. Sicily has always claimed a sort of right to contradiction and contradiction, a geography that resists any regulation and discipline - a land without a state, perhaps even devoid of any political power. Sicily is an anarchist phenomenon, as the nomad makes any classification impossible: and it is impossible to get lost if there are no maps.
